Recruiting a serving youth corps member is different from hiring a graduate after national service. University outreach can help an employer explain opportunities, but NYSC controls the service-year deployment process. A clear plan keeps official placement, supervised work and post-service employment from being confused.
Wigmore Trading welcomes practical university and employer enquiries. For campaign administration, employers can discuss our Recruitment Assistant service. This guide does not offer a paid route to a posting, relocation or exemption.
Identify the candidate’s stage
Final-year students may still have academic commitments. Prospective corps members are awaiting the applicable mobilisation process. Serving corps members have service obligations and an official posting. Graduates who have completed service can be considered for an ordinary vacancy under the employer’s requirements.
Ask only for the information necessary at each recruitment stage. Handle any status documents through an appropriate verified channel. Do not ask applicants to send identity records to a public comment section or to an unofficial intermediary.
University partnerships do not allocate NYSC postings
NYSC’s Corps Mobilization information describes deployment and relocation functions. Employers should confirm the current host and placement process with the relevant NYSC office. A university introduction or a company’s interest letter does not override an official posting.
Do not promise a preferred state, acceptance, relocation or guaranteed retention in exchange for payment. Career offices should describe the opportunity accurately and avoid presenting a corporate relationship as authority to determine service-year assignments.
Prepare a useful host brief
- Organisation identity, actual work location and responsible manager.
- Work suitable for the person’s training and level.
- Supervision, induction and necessary equipment.
- Practical welfare and reporting arrangements.
- How official NYSC requirements and activities will be accommodated.
Confirm the applicable obligations and host instructions directly before committing. Do not copy historic allowance amounts from old legislation or web posts into a current offer. State what the organisation itself will provide in writing.
Follow the official service-year process
The NYSC bye-laws address duty, reporting, employer assessments and communication channels. Use those official arrangements for service-related matters. Do not substitute a normal graduate interview campaign for the applicable NYSC acceptance procedure.
Employers and participants should route service concerns through the appropriate supervisor and NYSC office. Do not ask someone to induce rejection of a posting or disregard leave and travel requirements to fit an ordinary company schedule.
Meaningful work and supervision
Agree assignments that develop capability and contribute to the business. Examples might include supervised customer-query analysis, stock-data preparation or a bounded research task. The responsible manager should explain the objective, review the work and provide regular feedback.
A new graduate should not be left alone to make regulated decisions, operate unfamiliar equipment or manage confidential systems without authorisation. Provide a clear way to ask questions and raise concerns. Service-year status is not a substitute for training.
Post-NYSC graduate and trainee recruitment
For an ordinary post-service vacancy, publish responsibilities, work location, pay information, joining date and selection stages. Assess job-related evidence consistently. Prior internships or service experience can inform the development plan, but a familiar company name is not proof that someone performed a particular task.
If you intend to retain someone after service, confirm headcount and budget and make a written offer through the normal employer process. Explain that a positive placement experience does not automatically create a permanent vacancy.
How universities can support the transition
Career teams can help students understand role options, prepare applications and distinguish academic placements from service-year requirements. Employers can provide realistic descriptions of work and feedback about relevant skills. Neither side should promise official NYSC outcomes that it does not control.
Use a manageable pilot for any ongoing relationship. Review learning, attendance, supervision and recruitment outcomes accurately. Count actual appointments separately from introductions and expressions of interest.
