Talk to us about this service

Trade, import, logistics, sourcing — whatever you're planning, the fastest way to a quote is a WhatsApp message. Our team replies during Lagos business hours.

Your message tells us which page you came from

A career fair is useful when students leave knowing what your company does, which roles are real and how to apply. An attractive stand alone does not create a graduate pipeline. Employers need a relevant message, trained representatives and a follow-up process that starts before the event.

Wigmore Trading welcomes focused proposals for university employer engagement. Companies managing their own campaign can discuss recruitment administration support. Agree the activity, responsibilities and budget before announcing a collaboration.

Decide whether the event is for hiring or awareness

A hiring event should lead to defined vacancies or placement opportunities. An awareness session can explain a sector, introduce work or build longer-term interest. Both can be worthwhile, but students should be able to tell which one they are attending.

If no roles are open, say so. Offer a useful discussion, approved talent-interest route or future notification option without presenting a waiting list as a job offer. Keep educational participation separate from a requirement to buy your products or promote your brand.

Choose a format that matches the audience

Format Best use Preparation
Career-fair stand Introduce several roles to a broad audience Short role summaries, application route and staff briefing
Departmental talk Explain specialist work Relevant examples and time for questions
Small recruitment session Discuss a defined cohort or role family Eligibility, schedule and assessment plan
Student-club workshop Build a specific skill Learning objective and agreed club/university permissions
Virtual briefing Reach dispersed candidates Accessible joining route and clear follow-up

Business schools and universities set their own formats and participation conditions. Use the official careers team to confirm dates, access, charges and any branding approval. An old event page is not proof that the same opportunity is available this year.

Prepare a message candidates can understand

Explain the work in plain language. Show how an order moves from a customer request to delivery, how an analyst checks a report or how a support team resolves a query. Use anonymised examples and describe the learning curve.

Give an honest account of location, hours, travel and development. Avoid unsupported claims about earnings, automatic promotions or guaranteed international exposure. People should be able to decide whether the job fits before spending time applying.

Use student clubs and ambassadors responsibly

A club may help organise a sector session, but it may not have authority to sign a university partnership. Confirm the approval route. If students act as paid ambassadors or event helpers, agree the task, payment, supervision and use of content.

Do not make recruitment depend on a student’s social-media reach unless that is genuinely relevant to the advertised job. Neither a club membership nor personal access to an organiser should become a hidden selection criterion.

Collect interest without collecting unnecessary records

A simple link or QR code can take students to an appropriate application page. Explain whether they are applying for a specific job or asking for future updates. Do not require sensitive documents at a public stand or leave paper CVs where unrelated visitors can read them.

Assign responsibility for follow-up. Limit access to the candidate information to the people who need it and use an agreed retention approach. Avoid adding attendees to unrelated marketing lists merely because they asked a question at your stand.

Follow up while the opportunity is still clear

  1. Send the role information or resource promised during the event.
  2. Confirm the application deadline and next stage.
  3. Respond to common questions through one consistent channel.
  4. Update applicants if the timetable changes.
  5. Tell the career office what happened after the event.

Prepare these messages in advance. A strong session followed by weeks of silence damages trust and wastes the university’s effort.

Measure the right outcomes

Count relevant conversations, eligible applications, completed stages, accepted offers and actual starts. Compare those outcomes with event costs and staff time. For an awareness session, use attendance, useful questions and feedback against the learning objective instead of pretending every attendee is a recruitment lead.

Ask students what remained unclear and ask the careers team whether your role descriptions matched their audience. That feedback can improve the next visit more than a social-media impression total.

Prepare an employer-engagement proposal

Send Wigmore your institution or company, audience, purpose, suggested format, dates and budget responsibilities. A proposal with a defined student benefit and practical next step is easier to assess than a request for an unspecified sponsorship. Use our university partnership proposal template to organise it.

Student leaders, club members and competition participants

Society presidents, consulting and finance club members, hackathon winners and case-competition participants can bring useful examples of teamwork and initiative. Ask what the person actually did, which constraints they faced and what outcome they can substantiate. Membership or a prize alone does not establish individual competence.

Offer the same application route to other suitable candidates. A student should not need a leadership title or a personal introduction to access a publicly advertised job. If a competition contributes to selection, publish the criteria and provide a fair way to demonstrate the same relevant skill.

When working with clubs, confirm the university’s approval route. A club officer may organise an event without authority to commit the institution to a corporate agreement. Keep promotional roles, paid ambassador work and job selection clearly described.
