A university recruitment partnership in Nigeria should make hiring more predictable: suitable candidates, clear placement dates, useful work and a named person responsible on each side. For an employer, the first question is not how many CVs a university can send. It is which business roles you can offer and how you will help the people selected succeed.

Wigmore Trading welcomes discussions with university career teams and employers developing practical talent pipelines. Companies that need help administering a hiring campaign can also explore our Recruitment Assistant service. Start with a defined brief so we can discuss an appropriate scope.

Choose the partnership model that solves your hiring problem

Your requirement Suitable starting model What to agree
Students for supervised work experience Internship or course-related placement Learning outcomes, dates, supervisor and assessment
Entry-level permanent staff Graduate recruitment campaign Funded roles, selection criteria and joining date
Future managers or analysts Graduate trainee or MBA pathway Role level, development plan and real vacancies
Specific skills or business problems Workshop, project or industry collaboration Deliverable, teaching input, resources and ownership

Mentoring, sponsorship and research can complement recruitment, but they create different obligations. A sponsored event does not automatically give an employer access to student records, exclusive recruitment rights or a university endorsement.

Start with roles, capacity and a realistic budget

Write down the work your business needs done during the next hiring cycle. A distributor may need sales trainees, inventory analysts and customer-service staff. A technology company may need junior developers and implementation support. Translate each requirement into tasks, essential skills and evidence a candidate could reasonably provide.

Confirm salary or allowance, equipment, supervision, workspace and onboarding before inviting applications. For a small business, two well-supported placements can produce better outcomes than a large cohort with no manager available to coach them. Include interview time, travel and training in the budget, alongside any university event charges.

Shortlist universities on practical evidence

There is no single best Nigerian university for every employer. Match course content, graduate level, location, placement calendar and the career office’s delivery process to your roles. Ask for examples of relevant student work and how the institution circulates opportunities. Published rankings alone do not establish fit for a warehouse analyst, engineering trainee or business-development role.

Use the career-services contact guide to find official starting routes for Lagos Business School, Pan-Atlantic University, UNILAG, Covenant University and Ashesi. These are institutions to approach independently; this guide does not claim that they have appointed or endorsed Wigmore.

Agree a simple operating plan

  1. Employer brief: roles, locations, remuneration, eligibility and application method.
  2. University route: the office handling circulation, placements or corporate engagement.
  3. Calendar: campaign launch, assessments, offers, academic commitments and start dates.
  4. Responsibilities: interview decisions, candidate communication, supervision and issue escalation.
  5. Review: the measures and date for deciding whether to repeat the pilot.

A memorandum of understanding can record an ongoing relationship. A focused recruitment event may need a simpler written scope. Have the responsible teams review any commitments, charges, branding permissions and information-sharing arrangements before signature.

Build fair, useful selection into the pipeline

Assess work-related skills consistently. A junior procurement applicant might compare two supplier quotations; an analyst might explain an anonymised spreadsheet. Keep exercises proportionate, provide instructions and consider reasonable adjustments. Do not turn a selection exercise into unpaid delivery of a live client project.

Give candidates the role facts, selection stages and response timetable. Record evidence against the same criteria rather than treating a university name, personal connection or confidence at a networking event as proof of ability.

Measure outcomes beyond the career-fair queue

Track qualified applications, completed assessments, accepted offers, actual starts, learning progress and retention. Compare sources using the same definitions. A large mailing list can generate little relevant interest; a smaller departmental partnership may produce more suitable applicants. Ask supervisors and students what failed during the pilot before increasing the next cohort.

Can an SME partner with a university?

Yes, a smaller employer can propose a limited, supervised project or a small number of funded roles. The university decides its requirements and whether the opportunity is suitable.

Does a partnership guarantee graduates or jobs?

No. Candidate interest, eligibility, assessment and available positions still determine recruitment. Publish only the opportunities you are ready to deliver.

Discuss your university hiring brief with Wigmore

Send the roles, headcount, location, start window and support you need. We can discuss recruitment administration and an appropriate coordination brief. University career offices can propose relevant cohorts or employer-engagement activities through the same initial conversation.

Recruiting honours, first-class and high-performing students

Use academic achievement as relevant context, then assess the capabilities required for the job. A first-class degree, scholarship or competition result does not by itself establish commercial judgement, technical competence or readiness to manage a project. Ask applicants to explain their own contribution to a piece of work and how they responded when an assumption proved wrong.

Offer a consistent route for candidates from different institutions and backgrounds. If a degree requirement is essential, explain why. Avoid describing a narrow list of campuses as the only source of high-quality talent without evidence.

Match the entry point to the person’s stage

Undergraduate interns, final-year students, postgraduate researchers, MBA candidates and experienced alumni have different availability and development needs. Confirm academic commitments, start dates and the level of responsibility before circulating a vacancy. For service-year candidates, use our NYSC and post-service employer guide and follow the appropriate official process.
