A university–industry partnership can develop skills, investigate a business problem or support students who need a better route into work. It is most useful when the academic and commercial purposes are both clear. Start with an outcome that students, faculty and the business can recognise and measure.

Wigmore Trading welcomes proposals connected to practical trade and business operations. Describe the learning or research need, the people involved and the contribution requested. A discussion can establish whether the proposed activity fits our operations and what scope would need approval.

Choose a model before describing it as a partnership

Skills workshops, internships, research projects, scholarships, incubators and executive education are different arrangements. They can support one another, but each needs its own responsibilities and evidence of benefit. A one-day sponsorship should not be presented as a long-term graduate-employment programme.

For employer-led training, identify a specific gap: business writing, inventory analysis, customer communication or another practical capability. Ask faculty and career staff how it fits the curriculum and the students’ level. Build exercises around learning, not a sales presentation disguised as education.

Skills development and employability

Design an activity with a baseline task, teaching input, practice and feedback. If students learn how to compare supplier quotations, the final exercise should show that they can identify missing cost and delivery information. If the topic is analytical reporting, assess whether they can explain a result and its limitations.

Record completion honestly. Attendance, demonstrated competence and an accredited qualification are different things. Do not promise certification or professional recognition unless the appropriate body and conditions have been confirmed.

CSR and youth-employment partnerships

A CSR proposal should explain the intended student benefit, selection process and resources. Possible activities include mentoring, access to learning tools or a supervised placement pilot. Decide who can participate and how the programme avoids favouring only those who already have strong personal networks.

Use measures appropriate to the activity. Mentoring can be assessed through participation and learning goals; employment outcomes need evidence of actual jobs and starts. Do not report every workshop participant as a person employed.

Scholarships and employment-linked support

Separate a scholarship award from a guaranteed job. If an employer proposes a service commitment or repayment condition, obtain appropriate legal review and make all conditions understandable before anyone accepts. Students need time to consider the commitment and ask questions.

Explain eligibility, covered costs, duration, renewal and the complaints route. Avoid publishing a scholarship or bonded programme as open until funding, selection and the responsible institution’s approvals are in place. This guide is a planning resource, not an announcement of a live Wigmore scholarship.

Research partnerships and business projects

Define the research question, method, data access, faculty oversight and expected output. A study of delivery reliability, for example, needs agreed definitions and controlled data before analysis begins. Do not ask students to make confident commercial recommendations from incomplete or unsuitable records.

Agree confidentiality, intellectual property, publication review and the handling of customer or employee information. Keep commercial sponsorship separate from an expectation that researchers must reach a favourable conclusion. The university’s research and ethics procedures may apply.

Innovation hubs, incubators and university spinouts

An innovation collaboration could test a logistics tool, a stock-reporting workflow or a customer-service idea. State whether the company is offering mentoring, a pilot customer, facilities or a potential procurement discussion. These are different from investment or guaranteed purchase.

Agree who owns existing and newly developed work, what information is confidential and how a pilot can end. Do not assume that access to an employer’s facility transfers a student’s invention, or that participation means the company will finance a startup.

Executive education and leadership development

If the objective is to develop current staff, prepare a separate learning brief. Identify the participant level, skills, delivery constraints and workplace application. Ask providers how they assess progress and what follow-up managers should provide.

A leadership course should connect to actual responsibilities. It cannot substitute for clear job design, feedback or a promotion process. Keep access to training distinct from a promise of a particular role.

Governance that makes delivery easier

  • A named lead and backup contact for each organisation.
  • A written activity plan, dates and deliverables.
  • Funding and in-kind contributions stated separately.
  • Permissions for branding, facilities, data and publication.
  • A method to raise concerns and stop unsuitable activity.
  • A review that records outputs and learning accurately.

Begin with a pilot where the relationship is new. Resolve what did not work before announcing a larger programme. A modest activity delivered well creates a firmer basis for a long-term partnership.

Propose a collaboration with Wigmore

Send the problem, target cohort, intended outcome, academic lead, timeline and the contribution requested. Explain how the proposal relates to trade, supply chains, business operations or employability. Wigmore can review fit and discuss next steps; funding, access and institutional commitments require a specific agreement.

Entrepreneurship students, incubator teams and innovation talent

University incubators, accelerators and innovation hubs can introduce a company to people who have tested ideas and worked in small teams. Decide whether you want to recruit an individual, commission a project or explore a commercial pilot with a startup. These are different relationships and should not be collapsed into a general talent partnership.

For recruitment, assess the person’s contribution, relevant skill and interest in employment. For a pilot, agree ownership of existing work, confidentiality, deliverables and evaluation. Do not make participation depend on handing over an invention or suggest that a meeting guarantees investment.

Scholarship students and competition winners should receive the same clear role information and proportionate selection as other applicants. If support includes an employment commitment, obtain proper review and communicate the terms before anyone accepts.
