A graduate recruitment scheme works when it connects real entry-level roles to a manageable development plan. Advertising a large intake without approved positions, supervisors or meaningful work creates disappointment for applicants and extra work for managers. Start smaller if that is what your business can support.
Wigmore Trading can discuss recruitment administration for an employer’s campaign through our Recruitment Assistant service. University teams can bring a cohort and calendar proposal for consideration. The plan below helps both sides define what they are agreeing to deliver.
Separate immediate hiring from future talent development
An entry-level vacancy fills a specific continuing role. A graduate trainee scheme adds structured development and review. A management trainee programme should describe the route to broader responsibility, not suggest that every participant will immediately manage people. A fast-track label needs an actual development process behind it.
List the functions, funded headcount and joining dates. Include vacancies that will genuinely exist when the cohort finishes its rotations. If future roles are uncertain, explain how final placement decisions will be made rather than promising automatic promotion.
Build a workforce plan before choosing campuses
Ask each manager what work is suitable for a new graduate and which skills can be taught. Sales teams might need account research and customer follow-up. Finance teams might need reconciliation and reporting support. Logistics teams might need delivery analysis or inventory control. Define who will review the output.
Do not turn every preferred skill into an entry requirement. Separate essentials from training topics. Avoid using unrelated degree classifications, social connections or a narrow set of school names as substitutes for evidence that someone can perform the work.
Use a repeatable selection process
- Publish a complete vacancy: duties, location, package information, eligibility and stages.
- Collect a proportionate application: relevant qualifications, availability and role evidence.
- Assess a practical skill: a short, accessible task matched to the job.
- Interview consistently: common core questions and a documented scoring guide.
- Review and communicate: decisions, checks, written offers and joining instructions.
Agree a response timetable and maintain one reliable record of application status. If a stage changes, tell candidates promptly. Bulk hiring needs clearer communication, not fewer explanations.
Illustrative campaign timetable
| Stage | Work to complete |
|---|---|
| Preparation | Approve roles, pay, supervisors, criteria and application handling |
| Campus outreach | Agree university circulation dates and hold a role briefing |
| Assessment | Run bounded exercises, interviews and evidence review |
| Offer and joining | Confirm terms, checks, access, induction and first assignments |
| Development review | Assess learning, delivery and readiness for the next responsibilities |
This is a sequence to adapt, not a guaranteed campaign duration. Academic calendars, recruitment capacity and the role can change the schedule.
Make rotations useful
Each rotation needs a learning objective, an accountable manager and an output. Moving a trainee between departments without a plan can leave them repeating introductions rather than developing a skill. Give the participant a short brief, the tools required and a feedback date.
For a distribution business, a sensible sequence might connect customer demand, stock planning and delivery performance. For an analyst, it might connect data preparation, interpretation and a decision note. Select the sequence for your business instead of copying another company’s programme.
Support accessible, job-related assessment
Explain the tools required for tests and provide a route for adjustment requests. A timed online task can measure connectivity as much as skill if it is poorly designed. Offer appropriate alternatives where needed and review actual work evidence.
Use human judgement in selection and document reasons against the role criteria. Do not use a candidate’s health, ethnicity, religion or family circumstances as a proxy for expected performance. Recruiters should have a defined way to escalate concerns about an assessment.
Measure delivery and retention
Track application quality, completion of stages, offer acceptance and actual starts. After joining, review training completion, quality of work, supervisor feedback and retention. Separate a recruitment problem from an onboarding problem: early departures may reflect unclear roles or poor support rather than weak universities.
Can a startup run a graduate programme?
Yes, if it can fund the work and supervision. A small cohort with transparent responsibilities is more credible than an elaborate leadership promise without a budget.
Do all trainees need the same degree?
Set requirements for the work. Some roles need particular technical study; others can be assessed through transferable skills and practical tasks.
Get your campaign ready for an enquiry
Send the number of funded roles, functions, work location, joining window and support required. Wigmore can discuss application administration, scheduling and coordination under an agreed scope. For roles at Wigmore, use the official careers listings and the requirements in the particular vacancy.
Graduate cohorts before and after national service
A post-NYSC trainee campaign and an opportunity for a serving corps member need separate arrangements. Confirm the intended joining date, service status and documentation appropriate to the role through the responsible employer process. Do not promise to secure a posting or change a candidate’s official service obligations.
Graduates with internship or previous work experience can enter at different levels. Use the work they have actually done to decide the development required. A candidate who has supervised a small project still needs a clear reporting line and feedback in a new company.
Our NYSC employer and post-service hiring guide explains how to keep university outreach, official placement and ordinary graduate recruitment distinct.
