A strong graduate talent pipeline begins with the work, not a generic request for “top graduates”. Technology, finance, logistics and engineering teams need different evidence. University partnerships become more useful when the employer explains the tasks, essential knowledge and training it can provide.
Wigmore Trading works across trade and business operations and welcomes a focused recruitment-support enquiry. Employers can discuss our Recruitment Assistant service for campaign administration. University teams proposing relevant cohorts should describe the course, student level and availability.
Finance, consulting and investment teams
Distinguish commercial finance support from investment banking, private equity, fund management or regulated advisory work. A graduate may be suitable for reconciliation, research or junior analysis without being qualified to make independent investment recommendations. Describe who reviews the work and which responsibilities require additional experience or authorisation.
Use a short fictional case: reconcile a ledger, identify assumptions in a cash-flow model or explain the limitations of a market estimate. Assess accuracy and reasoning. An MBA or finance degree is useful context, but it does not replace evidence matched to the role.
Technology, fintech and proptech
Define the technical area: software development, quality assurance, data analysis, customer implementation, cybersecurity support or product operations. “Tech talent” is not one skill set. Tell the university which tools are essential and which can be taught.
Ask for a bounded demonstration or discussion of previous work. A junior developer can explain a small application; an analyst can clean a supplied dataset; a product-operations candidate can map a fictional user problem. Check reasoning and the person’s own contribution, rather than relying on a long tool list.
Logistics, procurement and supply-chain roles
Useful entry-level work can include order tracking, supplier-data preparation, stock records and delivery-performance analysis. Teach the company’s procedures and escalation rules. Graduates should understand when to ask a manager about a discrepancy rather than silently changing a record.
A realistic assessment might compare delivery options using provided costs and constraints. Another might identify inconsistencies in an anonymised stock sheet. Keep customs decisions, safety-critical dispatch and contractual commitments within the authority of the responsible professionals.
Engineering, construction, real estate and oil and gas
Map each role to the necessary discipline and site requirements. A project analyst, engineering trainee, quantity-surveying assistant and maintenance technician are not interchangeable. Verify which qualifications, registrations, safety training and supervision the actual work requires with the relevant specialists.
For a student placement, coordinate learning outcomes with the department. Use safe desktop exercises for recruitment rather than testing an untrained applicant on live equipment. Explain site access, protective equipment, travel and accommodation before someone accepts.
Sales, customer operations and commercial expansion
A graduate sales role needs a clear market, product and level of authority. Assess the ability to research an account, explain a product and write a useful follow-up. Do not require a candidate to bring a private customer list or fund stock purchases as an undisclosed condition of employment.
For customer-service work, use a fictional enquiry and assess listening, clarity, record-keeping and escalation. If the job involves field visits, state the location, transport arrangements and reporting expectations. A campus event should reflect the real job rather than a vague promise of entrepreneurship.
NGOs, development organisations and social enterprises
Separate programme research, monitoring support, procurement administration and field delivery. Applicants should understand the project’s duration and funding basis. A short grant-funded assignment is different from an indefinite staff position.
Use exercises with invented or anonymised beneficiary information. Teach safeguarding and confidentiality before granting access to sensitive records. Match any field responsibilities to training, security planning and accountable supervision.
Startups and SMEs: recruit for the next useful contribution
A growing company may need someone who can learn across functions, but “do everything” is not a workable job description. Identify one primary role, the expected output and the person who will coach the graduate. Explain how priorities may evolve and which tasks remain outside the role.
University incubators and student projects can introduce employers to emerging skills, but entrepreneurship participation does not make someone an employee or transfer ownership of their idea. Agree the relationship before requesting commercial work.
Build one assessment matrix per role family
For each task, record the capability being assessed, the evidence required, a common scoring scale and who reviews it. Add the training required after appointment. Use the same criteria for all candidates applying for that role.
Review early performance against the same work expectations. Feedback to the career office can then identify a real skills gap, such as spreadsheet checking or business writing, instead of a vague complaint that graduates are not employable.
Send a role-specific recruitment brief
Tell Wigmore the sector, functions, seniority, headcount, location and joining window. Include the essential technical requirements and the administration you want supported. We can discuss an appropriate scope; specialist credentials, selection decisions and offers remain subject to the responsible employer’s checks.
Marketing graduates, business associates and operations staff
Turn each role into a practical output. A marketing graduate might analyse a fictional campaign and propose a test; a business associate might prepare a customer brief; an operations trainee might identify gaps in an order-to-delivery workflow. Define which tools can be learned after appointment.
Project managers and consultants need an appropriate level of delivery experience. For an early-career role, explain what they will coordinate and who owns the decisions. Do not give a graduate a senior title while leaving them without authority, resources or guidance.
Engineers, developers and remote analysts
Use discipline-specific evidence and suitable supervision. Review a developer’s reasoning and contribution to code, an analyst’s interpretation of supplied data or an engineer’s approach to a safe fictional scenario. Confirm technical credentials where the actual duties require them. Keep regulated decisions and safety-critical work with authorised personnel.
Recruitment support should administer the agreed process, not replace the employer’s technical judgement. Send Wigmore the role family, essential requirements, campaign volume and tasks your HR team wants supported.
