Hiring an MBA graduate should begin with a business problem and an appropriate role level. An employer expanding in Nigeria may need commercial analysis, distribution planning or operational improvement. A company building a management pipeline may need people who can learn across functions. Those requirements should shape the recruitment brief before you approach a business school.
Wigmore Trading offers a starting point for discussing recruitment administration through our Recruitment Assistant service. Business school career teams can also submit a focused employer-engagement proposal. Tell us the type of opportunity and cohort you have in mind.
MBA hiring differs from undergraduate campus recruitment
Candidates can bring very different levels of prior employment, sector knowledge and management experience. Do not assume that an MBA title means someone is ready for every executive role. Equally, avoid advertising an experienced professional position with entry-level responsibilities and an unexplained pay structure.
State the actual decision authority, reporting line, team responsibility and commercial objectives. If the role is an analyst or management trainee position, explain the progression and learning support. If it is a leadership role, assess previous delivery alongside academic learning.
Where employers can begin
Lagos Business School’s MBA Careers portal includes company engagement for jobs, internships and events. Its employer recruitment form is a direct route for a defined talent requirement. Confirm the school’s current process and any event terms directly.
For other Nigerian or West African business schools, identify the official careers or corporate-relations team and ask which programme’s candidates are available. An executive-education participant, a full-time MBA student and a recent business undergraduate represent different talent pools. Use our university employer contact guide to avoid confusing admissions with recruitment.
Build a brief the careers office can circulate
- Business objective: the problem the person will help solve.
- Role scope: responsibilities, decision rights and reporting manager.
- Evidence required: relevant prior experience and practical skills.
- Package: location, work pattern, remuneration and benefits information.
- Process: closing date, assessment stages and joining window.
Explain travel, relocation and any genuine work-authorisation requirement. Where confidentiality limits public detail, provide enough information for candidates to assess the opportunity and agree a sensible disclosure stage.
Assess commercial judgement with a bounded case
Use a fictional or anonymised scenario related to the role. For a distribution-planning position, ask a candidate to compare routes to market using a small supplied dataset. For an operations role, ask how they would investigate rising stock discrepancies. Give everyone the same information and allow clarification.
Score the reasoning, use of evidence, assumptions and communication. A polished slide deck should not hide weak analysis. Keep the exercise short enough for a recruitment process and avoid asking candidates to solve a live client problem for free.
Internship, full-time hire or project collaboration?
A business school internship can test a defined project where supervision and an appropriate calendar are available. A full-time hire suits an approved continuing role. A consulting-style student project may be part of teaching and require faculty involvement, a confidentiality arrangement and clear ownership of outputs.
Choose the arrangement honestly. If you need a permanent employee immediately, do not describe a short academic project as a substitute. If you want insight rather than recruitment, agree that purpose before collecting applications.
Executive education is a separate conversation
Recruiting graduates and buying executive education solve different problems. The first adds people to a team. The second develops existing employees. Define which capability you need: leadership, finance, operations, strategy or another topic. Ask the provider about learning objectives, delivery, participant level and how progress will be assessed.
A corporate education partnership should not imply preferential access to candidates or a guaranteed qualification for everyone nominated. Confirm the programme’s admissions, attendance and assessment conditions independently.
Budget and onboarding matter as much as sourcing
Plan recruitment costs, manager time and the work the new hire can actually own. An experienced graduate can still need product, customer and systems training. Set early priorities, access arrangements and regular feedback meetings. Agree what good delivery looks like in the first review period.
Does an MBA guarantee immediate management performance?
No. Assess relevant experience, judgement and fit for the actual responsibilities. Development and supervision remain important.
Can SMEs recruit MBA talent?
A smaller business can offer meaningful responsibility and a credible growth path. Make the resources, compensation and decision scope clear rather than relying on a prestigious title.
Discuss your MBA talent requirement
Send Wigmore the role, sector, experience level, headcount and timeline. We can discuss the administrative support required for the campaign. Schools proposing a relationship with Wigmore should describe their cohort and engagement model; any institutional arrangement must be confirmed separately.
Business school alumni, MBA interns and postgraduate talent
Be explicit about which candidates you need. An MBA internship can suit a supervised commercial project, while alumni hiring may require evidence of several years of relevant delivery. A postgraduate researcher may bring deep subject knowledge but need a different onboarding plan for customer or operational responsibilities.
For associates, consultants and project managers, describe the actual level. “Associate” can mean an entry role in one firm and an experienced position in another. Specify the decisions the person will own, the work they will review and the expertise available around them. Assess prior experience and practical judgement rather than assuming the job title follows automatically from a degree.
Confirm candidate availability with the careers office. Part-time or executive-programme participants may already be employed and should not be described as a readily available full-time cohort.
