A materials recovery facility works when its equipment matches the waste arriving at the gate and the materials buyers will accept at the exit. Buying a conveyor or baler first and defining the process later can create a line that moves waste without producing saleable material.

Wigmore Trading supports procurement enquiries for waste sorting equipment, materials recovery lines, balers and compactors in Nigeria and Africa. Share your feedstock study, intended outputs and site details so we can assess equipment packages and logistics.

Measure the incoming material

Describe the sources, collection method, daily volume, contamination and seasonal variation. Mixed municipal waste, dry commercial recyclables and separately collected cardboard require different processes. Distinguish tonnes per day from hourly throughput and identify the hours actually available for operation.

Equipment Decision to resolve
Sorting conveyor Material presentation, manual stations, guarding and downstream interfaces
Separation equipment Target materials, contamination and required separation performance
Baler Material type, bale specification, handling and buyer requirements
Compactor Waste stream, collection vehicle interface and site access

Design backwards from the buyer

Ask prospective buyers about accepted materials, contamination, bale size, density, moisture and delivery quantities. A machine’s maximum advertised output is not a guarantee that the resulting material meets a buyer’s specification.

Plan storage for incoming material, finished bales and rejected fractions. Include weighing and recordkeeping so the operation can measure recovery, residual waste and actual sales rather than reporting only the material entering the site.

Check the complete line

Identify bottlenecks between reception, sorting, separation, baling and dispatch. Include transfer points, controls, electrical requirements, dust management and safe maintenance access. The responsible engineer should define guarding, emergency stops, fire precautions and operator protection.

A quotation for a standalone machine should not be mistaken for a fully integrated facility. Establish who designs the interfaces and who accepts the installed system against agreed criteria.

Plan site and environmental requirements

Review access roads, drainage, utilities, storage, noise, fire response and movement of people and vehicles. Consult the relevant authorities on facility approvals and the applicable NESREA regulations. Equipment purchase alone does not authorise a waste-processing operation.

Consider how rejected material and contamination will leave the site through appropriate channels. Residual disposal is an operating cost even when the main business is recycling.

Compare proposals on the same basis

Request feedstock assumptions, throughput conditions, energy demand, spare parts, installation, training and acceptance tests. Ask whether quoted capacity reflects clean material or the actual mixed stream you will handle. Include freight, clearance, foundations and local installation in the commercial comparison.

Do I need a full MRF immediately?

Not necessarily. A staged line may be appropriate where feedstock and offtake are still developing, provided the layout allows planned expansion.

What should I send Wigmore?

Provide material composition, sample photographs, target throughput, buyer specifications, location and site utilities. We can assess suitable sourcing options and clarify the outstanding design questions.

Prepare your equipment enquiry

Note the intended application, delivery location, quantities, target dates and required support. Include an approved specification or describe the work the equipment must perform. Separate confirmed requirements from assumptions and identify the person responsible for technical acceptance.

This checklist helps you prepare a brief; it does not submit information. Start with non-confidential project details. Do not include patient or student records, credentials or private financial documents in a general sales enquiry.
