Buying from Russia: food and fertiliser, with sanctions checks
Russia is the world’s largest wheat exporter and a major fertiliser supplier, and African buyers still ask us for both. As a company with teams in the UK and the USA, we follow UK and US sanctions, so our answer is specific: food and fertiliser, yes, after screening; most other Russian goods, no.
What we can and can’t help with
| Goods | Our position | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Wheat, barley, corn | Yes, after screening | Food is carved out of most UK, EU and US sanctions |
| Fertiliser (urea, potash, NPK) | Yes, after screening | Fertiliser trade is covered by licences and exemptions |
| Sunflower oil and food products | Yes, after screening | Food carve-outs apply, but suppliers must not be designated |
| Oil, coal, steel, gold, timber | No | Heavily sanctioned and not worth the legal risk for our clients |
| Machinery and technology | No | Export and import controls apply in both directions |
We check the supplier, its owners, the bank and the vessel against UK, EU and US sanctions lists before anything is signed. If any party is designated, the deal stops. This protects you as much as us: banks in Nigeria, Ghana and Kenya also screen these payments.
How Russian grain is shipping now
With the main Black Sea grain terminals at Novorossiysk stopped from mid-August 2026, Russia moved wheat exports to the Baltic. That means longer voyages to Africa via the Atlantic and higher freight. Caspian ports handle most remaining volume to Iran, which we do not serve.
