Buying from Ukraine in 2026: what still ships, and how

Updated October 2026Reading time 7 minBy Wigmore Trading
Status updated October 2026Origin checks on every lot

Ukraine is one of the world’s biggest sources of wheat, corn and sunflower oil, and much of it has gone to Africa and the Middle East. In 2026 the question is not whether Ukraine has grain to sell, it does, but how it gets out. Here is where things stand and how we still move cargo.

Jul 2026first day no ship entered Odesa since the 2023 corridor opened
–45%Ukraine’s September grain exports, year on year
~2.5m ta month: capacity of the Danube, rail and road routes
+$50/ttypical extra cost of the bypass routes

Export status, October 2026

Route Status What it means for buyers
Odesa deep-water ports Largely shut after repeated strikes; exporters told to plan for no reopening before December–January Large bulk cargoes are hard to book; expect delays
Danube ports (Izmail, Reni) Working, with vessel queues at the Sulina canal Best option for smaller bulk lots and coasters
Rail and road into the EU Working; most rail grain crosses the western border Container and bagged cargo via EU ports such as Constanța and Gdańsk
War-risk insurance The high-risk zone now covers almost the whole Black Sea Higher freight and insurance costs, priced into every offer

FAQs

Questions buyers ask us

Can I still buy Ukrainian wheat?
Yes, but most cargo now leaves through the Danube ports or by rail and road into the EU, at higher cost. Large deep-water cargoes from Odesa are hard to book until the ports reopen.
How much more does the bypass route cost?
Industry estimates put it at around $50 or more per tonne above the deep-water route, before insurance.
Can you ship in containers?
Yes. Containerised wheat, corn and sunflower oil can move by rail to EU ports and then by container line to Africa.
Is trade with Ukraine sanctioned?
No. Trade with government-controlled Ukraine is not sanctioned. Goods from Russian-occupied regions are, so we verify origin.
