Wigmore Trading is a fast-growing and dynamic trading and industrial services company based in Lagos, Nigeria. As part of our expansion into mining and extractive operations, we are seeking an experienced and safety-driven professional to lead and manage blasting activities across our projects.
Role Overview
The Senior Blasting Specialist will be responsible for planning, designing, and executing safe and efficient blasting operations. This role is critical to ensuring optimal rock fragmentation, operational efficiency, and strict compliance with all Nigerian safety and regulatory standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and implement drill and blast plans for mining and quarry operations
- Oversee the handling, storage, and use of explosives in compliance with Nigerian laws and regulations
- Conduct blast calculations, timing sequences, and fragmentation analysis
- Ensure adherence to Health, Safety & Environment (HSE) standards at all times
- Supervise blasting teams, including shotfirers and drill operators
- Monitor and control blast vibration, fly rock, and environmental impact
- Liaise with regulatory authorities including the Ministry of Mines & Steel Development
- Maintain accurate records of explosives usage and blasting activities
- Train and mentor junior staff on safe blasting practices
- Investigate and report any incidents or near-misses
Requirements
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Mining Engineering (preferred), Civil Engineering, or related field
Certifications
- Valid Blasting Certificate / Shotfirer License recognised in Nigeria
- Compliance with Nigerian Explosives Act and Mining Regulations
- Relevant HSE certifications (NEBOSH or equivalent is an advantage)
Experience
- Minimum of 7–10 years’ experience in drilling and blasting operations
- Proven experience in open-pit mining or quarry environments
- Strong track record of managing blasting operations safely and efficiently
Technical Skills
- Proficiency in blast design and analysis software (e.g. JKSimBlast, Surpac, or equivalent)
- Strong understanding of explosives types (ANFO, emulsions, detonators, etc.)
- Expertise in fragmentation control, vibration monitoring, and blast optimisation
