Buying a passenger or cargo ship is a technical and legal project, not an ordinary container shipment. The vessel must suit the intended service, ownership arrangement and operating jurisdiction. Begin with a naval, marine and commercial brief before reviewing individual offers.
Wigmore Trading can assess a vessel sourcing or coordination enquiry involving Japan. Describe the intended operation and the professional support already appointed. Vessel availability, seller authority and delivery scope require specific verification; this guide does not represent an owned fleet or a current vessel listing.
Define the operating requirement
For a passenger vessel, describe route, passenger capacity, terminal access and service pattern. For a cargo ship, provide cargo type, required capacity, port limits, draft and handling needs. Speed, endurance, machinery and accommodation requirements should come from the actual operating plan.
Ask qualified marine professionals to translate those needs into a specification. A ship suitable for one domestic trade may require changes or may be unsuitable for your proposed flag and route.
Ownership and seller authority
Verify the registered owner, seller’s authority, vessel identity and the documents needed for a lawful sale and transfer. Have maritime counsel review title, encumbrances, contractual terms and the relevant jurisdictions. A broker’s introduction is not proof that a seller can deliver clear title.
Confirm where and how the vessel can be inspected, who holds relevant records and the proposed closing conditions. Do not release funds based on photographs or an unverified vessel particulars sheet.
Condition, survey and classification
Arrange surveys and technical review by suitably qualified independent parties. Examine maintenance history, machinery condition, structural information, statutory documents and class status where relevant. Establish what must be tested or repaired before acceptance.
Class records or a recent survey should be reviewed for their scope, date and outstanding items. They do not automatically establish fitness for your new passenger service or cargo operation.
Flag, destination and operating approvals
Determine registration, import and operational requirements with the responsible maritime authorities and advisers. Passenger operations, domestic coastal trades and other uses can raise additional conditions. Do not assume that a foreign sale agreement establishes permission to operate at the destination.
Check the proposed ownership structure, manning, insurance and any required modifications. Resolve material eligibility questions before concluding that a quoted purchase price represents a workable project.
Refit and mobilisation
Specify repairs, conversion, equipment and documentation required before delivery. Agree a survey-based work scope and acceptance process. Account for shipyard time, testing, spares and the possibility that findings change the budget.
Delivery may involve a professionally managed voyage or another specialised transport arrangement. Appoint the appropriate marine parties to determine seaworthiness, crew, routing, insurance and handover requirements. Do not treat vessel delivery as a guaranteed ordinary freight service.
Compare total acquisition cost
Include survey, legal work, purchase, taxes and fees where applicable, refit, delivery, registration, crewing and readiness for service. Assess operating and maintenance costs against realistic revenue assumptions. A low sale price can reflect substantial future work.
Agree the currency, deposit and closing mechanism with qualified advisers. Payment and transfer should follow the verified contractual process and conditions, not an informal demand to secure a vessel immediately.
Send a vessel sourcing brief
Provide vessel type, capacity, intended route and flag, technical requirements, budget basis and target delivery period. Identify your marine and legal representatives. Wigmore can assess the proposed sourcing and coordination scope and clarify what is needed for a documented next step.
