The right printer or photo lab system is the one that fits your work, operating budget and local support. A used machine with an attractive headline price can become expensive if it needs unavailable consumables, incompatible software or major repairs. Begin with a production brief.
Wigmore Trading can assess enquiries for industrial printing and photo lab equipment sourced from Japan. Specify the actual application and destination, and say whether you need new or used equipment. Brand representation, stock and support must be confirmed for the proposed offer.
Describe the output you need
For an industrial printer, provide the substrate or media, format, print area, colour and quality requirements, production volume and finishing workflow. A coding printer, label system and large-format graphics printer have different capabilities and costs.
For photo lab equipment, describe the print sizes, workflow, throughput, input files and expected finishing. Identify whether the process uses consumables or chemicals that need a separate sourcing and shipping plan. Do not treat every photographic machine as interchangeable.
Inspect the exact machine
Request model and serial number, configuration, usage information, service history and current photographs. Agree a test using representative media and sample files. Ask for output that demonstrates the quality and speed relevant to your work, not just a brief power-on video.
For used systems, have a competent technician assess wear, missing accessories, error history and required repairs. Define the condition in the contract and state which faults must be corrected before acceptance.
Software, licences and operating compatibility
Confirm which software, controllers and licences are included and whether they can be transferred. Check supported file formats, language, operating system and network requirements. A machine that powers on may still be unusable without the correct control software.
Identify installation and training requirements. Do not assume an overseas warranty or service agreement automatically covers your destination or a second-hand buyer.
Consumables and operating cost
List inks, media, printheads, filters, rollers and other model-specific consumables. Ask how they will be replenished and whether alternatives require approval. Calculate cost per acceptable output using realistic waste, maintenance and downtime assumptions.
For chemical photo-processing workflows, involve qualified technical and environmental personnel. Confirm product documentation, handling and disposal requirements separately. Machinery freight does not automatically include acceptance of associated chemicals.
Pack for a sensitive machine
Have the supplier or specialist prepare the machine for transport according to the appropriate technical procedure. Record the packing configuration, accessories and consumables supplied. Protect delicate assemblies and agree insurance suitable for the cargo and route.
Provide dimensions and weight after packing. Check site access, unloading and reassembly before dispatch. Avoid choosing a freight option solely on price when the goods need specialised handling.
What should the quotation include?
- Exact model, condition, configuration and included accessories.
- Inspection and acceptance test, with responsibility for rectification.
- Software and licence terms.
- Consumable starter set and replenishment information.
- Origin packing, freight, destination delivery and installation scope.
- Warranty or seller support and the process for reporting a fault.
Keep exclusions visible. If commissioning is separate, budget for it before deciding whether the purchase is economical.
