Industrial and Construction Machinery from Japan: Buyer and Export Guide

Buying industrial machinery from Japan should start with the process or project it must serve. A machine’s brand and purchase price do not show whether it can meet your capacity, utility and maintenance requirements. A suitable enquiry makes those requirements visible before a supplier offers a unit.

Specify function, capacity and site conditions

Describe the material or work, required output, operating hours and environment. Provide power, footprint, access, foundation and utility constraints. For a replacement machine, record the interfaces with existing equipment and the downtime you can accept.

For construction vehicles, specify the actual task, load or working requirement and attachments. Excavators, loaders, cranes and other large machines require different inspection and mobilisation plans. A broad request for heavy equipment will not produce comparable quotations.

New, used and refurbished offers

Ask the seller to identify model, serial number, year, configuration and condition. For used equipment, request operating records where available, service history and evidence relevant to the proposed purchase. A low displayed hour count alone is not proof of overall condition.

Define refurbished work precisely: what was replaced, which tests were performed and who stands behind the result. Obtain an inspection by a suitably competent person and agree acceptance criteria before committing funds.

Valves, air pumps and supporting components

Specify application, media, pressure and temperature duty, material, connections and control requirements for valves. For air pumps or compressors, provide the required flow, pressure, operating pattern and installation conditions. Have the technical selection checked by the responsible engineer.

Do not assume every used compressor is eligible for import. Nigeria’s prohibition information includes used compressors in a specified category. Classification, condition and destination requirements must be resolved for the exact item.

Agree a test and inspection scope

A visual check can identify obvious damage but may not establish performance under load. Decide whether you need operational testing, dimensional checks, control-system verification or an independent survey. Agree who witnesses tests and how results are recorded.

Use a written process for non-conformity. State whether the seller must repair, replace, allow reinspection or refund under agreed conditions. Avoid relying on a general promise that everything works.

Project cargo and site delivery

Provide dimensions and weight in shipping configuration, lifting points and any proposed dismantling. Determine whether container, flat-rack, breakbulk or another route suits the cargo with the appointed forwarder. A qualified party should plan lifting, securing and reassembly.

Check receiving access, unloading equipment and temporary storage before shipment. Machinery that reaches the port without a site-delivery plan can create avoidable storage and handling costs. Confirm who arranges destination surveys and transport permits where required.

Commissioning, spares and ownership cost

Ask what installation, calibration, training and manuals are included. Confirm the languages and software licences needed by your operators. List essential spares and consumables and establish a realistic support route.

Compare the purchase with freight, duties, site preparation, installation, maintenance and likely downtime. A lower-priced used unit may still be a poor fit if critical parts are unavailable or the control system cannot be supported locally.

Prepare a machinery sourcing brief

Send the application, capacity, technical specification, quantity, condition, site information and required date. Include drawings or an existing model reference where available.
