Buy from Southern and Central Africa: the minerals belt and beyond
This is the world’s copper and cobalt belt, with chrome, platinum, emeralds and rubies on top. It is also tightly regulated: several countries sell gold or diamonds only through state channels, ban raw ore exports, or demand conflict-minerals due diligence. Knowing those rules is the difference between a real deal and a costly one.

Copper and cobalt: compare the product and the transaction
A copper supplier enquiry for Zambia or the DRC should specify whether you require cathode, concentrate, alloy, scrap or another product. A copper cathode exporter should identify the producer, grade, dimensions, lot, origin and inspection arrangements. Similar photographs and an assay sheet do not establish ownership, physical stock or the seller’s authority to export.
For cobalt suppliers in the DRC, distinguish metal, hydroxide and other intermediate products. Specify the assay basis, moisture, impurities and settlement terms with a qualified technical and commercial team. The DRC is not the Republic of the Congo: identify the actual mine, processing site, export jurisdiction and transit route rather than relying on the word “Congo”.
Responsible mineral sourcing and battery minerals
Build a traceable chain from the production site through processing, aggregation and export. Check legal entities, beneficial ownership, licences, taxes, transport records and the payment beneficiary. Investigate inconsistencies, including documents that refer to unrelated lots or a different exporter. An independent assay assesses a sample’s composition; it does not prove lawful origin or eliminate human-rights risks.
The OECD mineral supply-chain guidance supports a risk-based process covering identification, assessment and response. Treat responsible sourcing as ongoing work with documented decisions, rather than a blanket “conflict-free” label based on a seller’s declaration.
Confirm current export permissions, controls, quotas or other restrictions for the precise material and shipment date with the responsible authorities. Mineral trade policies can change. Do not assume that a previous shipment or a supplier’s historic export licence establishes the route for your next order.
Mining investment in Zambia: separate the checks
An investment proposal requires more than evidence that a deposit contains copper. Review title, technical studies, metallurgy, infrastructure, environmental obligations, operating costs and a realistic route to market with qualified advisers. Verify claims about resources and reserves against the underlying work and the relevant reporting framework. No supplier quotation guarantees mine profitability.
