What “UK used” really means in Nigeria

“UK used” (also “London used” or “foreign used”) is market shorthand for a second-hand phone imported from abroad, as opposed to one used and resold in Nigeria (“Naija used”). Buyers like foreign-used phones because they are more likely to be lightly used, to have original parts, and not to have been through local repair shops.

The label is not a guarantee. Nobody certifies that a phone came from the UK, and some “UK used” stock comes from other countries or has been repaired before sale. Treat the label as a sales term and judge the phone by the checks below.

Why Jumia and Jiji prices differ

• Jumia prices usually include delivery options, a returns process and, on some listings, a seller warranty. You pay a premium for that safety net. On the iPhone 12 128GB it was roughly ₦90,000–₦120,000 above Jiji’s “UK used” range.
• Jiji is a classifieds site. Prices are lower and negotiable, but you inspect and pay in person, and protection depends on the seller.
• Battery health moves the price on both. In the iPhone 12 listings we saw, one seller quoted 92% battery health and another 85%. Ask for the figure on every iPhone.

Best places to buy UK-used phones in Nigeria

So which is the best site to buy UK-used phones in Nigeria? If you cannot inspect the phone in person, use Jumia and pick a listing with a stated warranty and a high seller rating. If you can inspect it and follow the checklist below, Jiji or a reputable market shop will usually be cheaper.

The 10-point checklist before you pay

1. Match the IMEI. Dial *#06#. The number on screen must match Settings › About and the box. A mismatch can mean a board swap or a stolen phone.
2. Check the iCloud lock (iPhone). Apple says that if you see an “iPhone Locked to Owner” screen, you should not buy the phone. Go through setup on the spot. If it asks for the previous owner’s Apple Account, walk away. (Apple: Activation Lock)
3. Check the Google/FRP lock (Android). Google’s Factory Reset Protection means that after a reset, you need the previous Google Account or screen lock, or “you won’t be able to use the device at all”. Ask the seller to remove their account and reset the phone in front of you. (Google: Factory Reset Protection)
4. Check the battery health. On iPhone, go to Settings › Battery › Battery Health. Apple designs iPhone 14 and earlier batteries to keep 80% of original capacity at 500 full cycles, and iPhone 15 batteries at 1,000 cycles. Below 80%, budget for a replacement. (Apple: battery and performance) On Samsung, use the Samsung Members app’s diagnostics.
5. Check that it is network-unlocked. Insert your MTN, Airtel, Glo or 9mobile SIM. Make a call and use mobile data. “Carrier locked” UK phones are a common trap.
6. Look for replaced parts. On recent iPhones, Settings › General › About can show “Unknown part” or parts-history messages for screens, batteries and cameras. On any phone, check for uneven screen colour or a lifted frame.
7. Test Face ID or the fingerprint sensor, the cameras, the speakers, the microphone and charging. Face ID often fails after poor repairs.
8. Check the screen. Look for burn-in (ghost images on OLED screens, visible on a grey background), dead pixels and touch dead zones.
9. Check for water damage. Look for a fogged camera lens, corrosion in the SIM tray, or a phone that gets hot while idle.
10. Get a receipt. It should show the IMEI, model, storage, price, the seller’s name, their phone number and any return or warranty period.

Common UK-used phone scams in Nigeria (and how to avoid them)

• The “pay for delivery first” trick. A seller posts a phone at an unusually low price and asks for a transfer before dispatch. The phone never arrives. Only pay after inspection, or use a platform with buyer protection.
• The iCloud-locked phone. It looks perfect and works on the day, but after the first reset or iOS update it asks for someone else’s Apple Account. Always check Activation Lock before paying (checklist step 2).
• The “UK used” that was fixed in Nigeria. It has a copy screen, a non-genuine battery or a swapped back glass. Check the parts messages and screen quality.
• The blacklisted or stolen phone. Mismatched IMEIs, no box and a seller in a hurry are warning signs.
• The storage lie. The listing says 256GB, but Settings says 64GB. Check before paying.
• Impersonators. Scammers sometimes pose as well-known companies on WhatsApp. Wigmore Trading’s own safety page lists our only official contact channels.

How to start a UK-used phone business in Nigeria

Buying used phones in bulk and reselling them is a popular small business. The margins come from careful sourcing and grading, not luck. A practical sequence:

1. Pick a niche. Choose one segment, such as mid-range iPhones, Samsung flagships or budget Android. Learn its common faults and what it resells for on Jiji and Jumia.
2. Source from graded suppliers. Buy from wholesalers who grade stock (A, B, C) and give a written return policy for faulty or locked units. Ask up front how iCloud- or FRP-locked phones are handled.
3. Cost it properly. Price, freight, import duty and levies, clearing, and local delivery all add up. Use our import duty calculator and landed cost calculator before you commit.
