Importing a drilling rig requires a project plan that connects the asset, intended use, customs arrangement and operating requirements. Shipping a rig to Nigeria does not by itself establish permission to deploy it. Local-content and customs responsibilities should be reviewed before the transport schedule is committed.

Wigmore Trading welcomes sourcing, import-logistics and customs-coordination enquiries. The licensed specialists, applicable approvals and service package must be confirmed for the actual project. This guide does not promise duty exemption or regulatory acceptance.

Identify the asset and transaction

State the rig type, ownership, lease or purchase arrangement, current location and intended period in Nigeria. Provide an itemised equipment register, serial references, packed dimensions and weights. Distinguish the rig itself from associated consumables, spare parts and support equipment.

Define the importer and the parties responsible for documentation, customs declarations and final disposition. A foreign supplier’s delivery promise should not leave these responsibilities ambiguous.

Temporary entry is not an automatic exemption

The Nigeria Customs Service has described temporary importation as a regulated concession in its temporary-importation compliance notice. Have the appointed customs professionals assess eligibility, conditions, security and discharge obligations for the actual equipment.

Do not assume leased equipment qualifies automatically or that a project extension also extends customs permission. Track deadlines, changes in use and any required re-export or regularisation with the responsible parties.

Prepare a customs and logistics work plan

Workstream What to establish
Classification and eligibility Accurate equipment description and applicable controls
Commercial records Ownership, lease or purchase documents and valuation evidence
Physical movement Approved cargo plan, handling and receiving arrangements
Customs responsibility Importer, appointed agent and document-review process
End of project Return movement or other authorised disposition

Agree how changes to the equipment list will be recorded. Unlisted replacement parts or substitutions can create discrepancies that delay clearance.

Review Nigerian-content requirements separately

Use the NCDMB operational-guidance resources and NOGIC JQS to establish the relevant process with qualified advisers. Registration, capability evidence, contracting requirements and local sourcing should be assessed against the actual role.

Do not describe a company as Nigerian-owned, indigenous or locally manufacturing equipment without supporting evidence. A sourcing guide does not establish Wigmore’s ownership of a fabrication yard or a rig fleet.

Evaluate local alternatives on technical merit

Local fabrication, parts supply or service support may be useful where it meets the approved specification. Confirm the actual producer, engineering responsibility, quality evidence and acceptance process. Local origin alone does not make a component interchangeable.

Compare complete delivered cost, lead time, service support and documentation. A lower purchase price may be offset by missing inspection evidence or incompatible equipment.

Can the rig be mobilised before the paperwork is complete?

The responsible parties should resolve eligibility and required approvals before committing the movement. A freight booking is not customs or operating approval.

What should I send Wigmore?

Provide the equipment list, ownership or lease basis, current location, destination, intended use period and document status. The team can assess a defined sourcing and logistics scope and identify information needed for a proposal.

Prepare your rig-services enquiry

Before contacting us, note the asset type and identity, project location, intended work, approved specifications, programme dates and current readiness. Identify the equipment, personnel or services required and who controls technical acceptance. Separate confirmed information from assumptions and list any approvals still outstanding.

Use a non-confidential brief initially. Do not send credentials, restricted well data, private personnel records or confidential contract files through a general sales enquiry. This checklist is for your own preparation and does not submit information.
