Rig site preparation should be based on the approved rig loads, ground conditions and operating plan. A drilling pad, access road, foundation and swamp location are not interchangeable civil-work packages. A clear scope helps project teams compare contractors and avoid a site that is delivered on paper but cannot receive the intended equipment.
Wigmore Trading welcomes enquiries for wellsite preparation procurement, materials sourcing and logistics coordination. Design, construction and technical acceptance must be assigned to suitably qualified parties for the project; this page does not provide engineering dimensions or foundation instructions.
Start with site information and the intended rig
Provide the location, available surveys, access constraints, rig layout and approved loading information. The responsible engineers should determine the investigations and design needed. A previous site’s foundation detail should not be copied without checking the new conditions.
Identify land access, boundaries, existing services, drainage, environmental sensitivities and community interfaces. Clarify which approvals and surveys are already complete and which the contractor must obtain or support.
Separate the civil-work packages
| Package | Scope question |
|---|---|
| Access | Can the approved transport arrangement reach and leave the site? |
| Drilling pad and work areas | What layout, loads, drainage and operational interfaces must the design address? |
| Foundations | Who supplies the approved engineering and acceptance requirements? |
| Utilities and support areas | Which service connections, camp and storage provisions are included? |
Define supply, installation, testing and reinstatement responsibilities separately. A quotation for earthmoving alone may omit important surveys, drainage or receiving arrangements.
Swamp and remote locations need specific assessment
For a Niger Delta swamp project, identify marine access, seasonal conditions, receiving structures and the planned rig-move method. Qualified civil, geotechnical and marine specialists should coordinate the interfaces. Do not assume a land-rig access design can be adapted by simply changing the transport mode.
Remote sites also need a realistic plan for materials, fuel, personnel, communications and maintenance. Include weather and access assumptions in the programme without promising a universal mobilisation duration.
Agree acceptance evidence before construction
Use the approved design to define inspection points, material records, test evidence and as-built information. Identify the authorised person who accepts each stage. Keep design changes and site deviations documented rather than relying on verbal approval.
The rig contractor, civil contractor and operator should understand when the site is ready for transport, assembly and commissioning. Different readiness dates may apply to different areas.
Compare total project scope
Ask for quantities, assumptions, exclusions, plant, materials, haulage, mobilisation and demobilisation. Establish responsibility for changed ground conditions and additional work. A low civil-work price may exclude the access or restoration needed for the actual project.
Include completion records and maintenance of temporary access during the campaign. The site’s condition at handover and its condition after rig departure should both be addressed in the contract.
Can Wigmore design the foundations?
Any engineering role must be confirmed with the actual qualified provider. Wigmore can discuss a defined procurement and sourcing requirement rather than imply an in-house design appointment.
What makes a useful enquiry?
Send the site, rig information, available investigations, drawings, target dates and required deliverables. The team can review the commercial scope and identify information needed for a comparable proposal.
Prepare your rig-services enquiry
Before contacting us, note the asset type and identity, project location, intended work, approved specifications, programme dates and current readiness. Identify the equipment, personnel or services required and who controls technical acceptance. Separate confirmed information from assumptions and list any approvals still outstanding.
Use a non-confidential brief initially. Do not send credentials, restricted well data, private personnel records or confidential contract files through a general sales enquiry. This checklist is for your own preparation and does not submit information.
